Greers Ferry, Arkansas

Greers Ferry, the community, has much to offer the weekender, vacationer, retiree or new resident. Located on Highway 16, just 23 miles north of the town of Heber Springs, Arkansas.

Greers Ferry's climate is moderate with approximately 50 inches of rainfall per year. Most of our rainy season is during the spring growing season. Snowfall average for the area is 3" per year. Average climate in winter is 30 degrees minimum temperature with a 50 degree daytime average. Summer climate is 75 degrees minimum temperature with a daytime average of 90 degrees.

Greers Ferry and the surrounding area abound with wildlife such as red fox, white tail deer, turkey, three variety of squirrels (including native Arkansas flying squirrels) and many other animals. The birds of the area include the red-headed woodpecker, pileated woodpecker (largest species), red-bellied woodpecker, blue jay, cardinal, Carolina chickadee, finches, sparrows, red-tail hawks and in the winter season in areas of the lake - the beautiful bald eagles! Greers Ferry has a population of 724 full time residents. The neighboring communities of Higden and Edgemont bump that figure slightly. The businesses of Greers Ferry are varied and of good variety. They include, but not limited to... two full service marinas, three boat dealerships, five restaurants, two gas stations, many various craft shops, one veterinarian and two chiropractic clinics, two medical facilities, three banks, a building supply, seven real estate companies, two Corp. of Engineers Parks and a host of other products or services.

The location of the town of Greers Ferry makes access to the entire lake easily accessible. The "Narrows" which divide the lake into two sections offer boaters the opportunity to explore both ends of the lake effortlessly.

The two marinas located in Greers Ferry offer many exciting forms of water recreation from Para-Sailing to houseboats, ski boat, pontoon boat and Jet Ski rentals. Rest assured, if you're here to enjoy the lakes activities, Greers Ferry offers it all!

For the retiree, the area offers a quiet relaxed living style you will enjoy. Friendly folks and services that you would expect. Greers Ferry has the only completely free E.M.T. service in the state. This E.M.T. service is funded by individual, corporate and private donations. With a lower-than-average cost of living, beautiful scenery and climate, superb medical facilities, and a warm friendly home-town atmosphere... you'll wonder why you didn't move years ago!

For the full-time resident, all the above applies as well as Greers Ferry offers one of the top ranking schools in the area. West Side School has many athletic programs, an excellent curriculum and a healthy violence free atmosphere, unlike some "city schools" in different areas. Enrollment is approximately 550+ students from grades K-12. There are also numerous churches in the area covering most all faiths.

Additional services in Greers Ferry include a police department, city government, water department, two propane gas companies, electric is served by First Electric Co-op Corp., and telephone service is provided by Southwestern Bell. There are two private airstrips for light aircraft and the area sales tax rate is 5.625%.

Each year the Greers Ferry Area Chamber of Commerce hosts two special events. In May it's the Annual Arts & Crafts Fair. Then in November they have the Annual Heart of the Lake Chili Challenge. This is always fun local competition of who can make the best chili. Each year in September is the Annual Greers Ferry Lake and Little Red River Clean-Up & Entertainment. Heber Springs, Arkansas

Heber Springs, Arkansas is located on the south shoreline of Greers Ferry Lake. It is approximately 75 miles from Little Rock, Arkansas and 135 miles from Memphis, Tennessee. Heber Springs enjoys a moderate climate all year and also offers many different activities throughout the year. The Heber Springs Area Chamber of Commerce is responsible for sponsoring many events such as the Annual Cardboard Boat Race, the Fourth of July fireworks display, SpringFest and other great events. Heber Springs is a thriving community committed to maintaining a clean-living lifestyle and environment, while promoting the economic development of the area.
